Milk

I just had to share this story with y'all! I have shared it with a few friends and all of them have said "you have to put that on the blog!" So, here goes...

We've been discussing lots of baby stuff around here. Things weren't so "normal" with Annabelle and we are trying to better prepare Wyatt for how things will be with Luke. For example, most babies don't go directly into an ICU, have open heart surgery at 4 days old, get fed only through NG & g-tubes & come home on 13 medications. That's all Wyatt knows so that's what he expects and we're trying to help him understand that this time will be different. This led to our conversation on nursing...

I decided it was probably best to give him a heads up that mommy hopes to nurse Luke (like I did him). He saw all the pumping that was going on with Annabelle and thought the natural progression was to pump, freeze, thaw, fortify, pour into feeding bag & set the Kangaroo Joey for another round. So, imagine his surprise when I told him that Luke will, hopefully, be able to get Mommy's milk directly from me. He just didn't get it and I tried to further explain to him that that is how he ate, too. Well, being the know it all that he is or at least thinks he is....he thought it through and then said "So, which one has chocolate milk?"

This is why....

Wyatt does not drink white milk...at all! Once he hit the 12 month mark and the pediatrician said we could start on cow's milk, he absolutely refused white milk. So, we were told to start with chocolate milk and then gradually mix in white milk until he was taking only white milk. He was way too smart for that. I tried Ovaltine, chocolate syrup, nesquick, you name it...for goodness sakes, the child is so darn picky that he only has a couple of brands that he will drink. If they aren't good enough, he'll even refuse chocolate milk that doesn't meet his standard.
Thus, the reason he didn't believe me when I told him that mommy only makes white milk and that he drank that for over a year.
His response..."Well, I only drink chocolate milk so you had chocolate milk for me."
So much for trying to explain that one!

Rebecca,
Patrick is the exact same. He would not drink white milk at 12 months either and so he, to this day, will only drink chocolate milk. Regan, however, LOVES white milk. Also, I was breast feeding Regan one day and my niece asked what I was doing. I explained and she said, "is there juice in the other one?"

OK... now that is just about the funniest nursing story I've ever heard! Love it! And I REALLY love that Wyatt is going to get to experience the "normal" way of doing things :) When I nursed Emily, Noah had a day or two of questions, but then kind of forgot about it! Thanks for sharing that story... it made me laugh out loud!

Oh that cracks me up!! I'm with Wyatt... the chocolatier (is that a word?) the better!!! How do you answer that question? You could always just say Mommy eats the chocolate (good excuse to eat LOTS of it) and then it turns the breast milk chocolaty! It sounds believeable.

That is way too funny. I'm going to be looking forward to a lot of explaining with my four year old after pumping for Natalie. Luckily, the older girls have been able to observe the "normal" feeding system from some of their aunts with babies. I'm sure that it might be easier to explain to girls than boys. Thanks for sharing. It gave be a good laugh.
